This treatment involves peels using different forms of acid to improve the texture of skin. The amount of skin removed will largely depend on the strength of the peel, type of chemical used and how long it has been left on the skin.

Chemical peels are generally described in accordance to how deep they work on the skin, for example superficial peels remove the outer layer of skin (epidermal layers). Medium depth peels remove both epidermal and upper dermal layers. A deep peel goes into the lower dermal layer.

Who can do it?

All medically trained staff can perform superficial peels such as lactic and glycolic acid. Some clinics train beauticians to perform very superficial peels.

Medium peels such as trichloracetic (TCA) can be performed by doctors but you should seek either an experienced dermatologist (skin specialist) or plastic surgeon for a deep phenol peel.

Cost of treatment

Prices vary depending on the level of the peel. Superficial peels start from £60. Medium depth peel start from £500 for a course of 4. For a deeper peel the price can start from £2000 for a course.
